Vietnam Reports Possible Extension Of Trial Of Local Casino Betting

Vietnam's finance ministry has proposed extending a pilot scheme to allow economically qualified Vietnamese locals to gamble at selected domestic casinos until 2024, local journalist VietnamNet reported. Under the scheme, the number of places allowed would be expanded to four from the current two, the report added

The pilot program was abolished in 2017 but was only activated in 2019.

Plans for a three-year trial were originally set to be reviewed this year, according to news outlets. Media reports, citing ministries, blamed the extension until 2024 on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This has not only curtailed inbound tourism trade from abroad but also affected domestic leisure activities.

The two casino projects currently underway in Vietnam are the now-operating Corona Resorts and Casino located in the southern resort of Phu Quoc, which opened in January 2019. The launch of the project boosted the start of pilot schemes.

The second, which has already been allowed to serve locals but is not yet open, is the Van Don initiative in Quang Ninh province, which is being pursued by the Sun Group, a Vietnamese company.

The outlet reported that the ministry had recommended adding a planned casino project on Hon Tre Island in Canhoa State. The plan is said to be partially supported by local accommodation company Vinpearl, which is part of Vietnam's famed conglomerate Vin Group.

The fourth program covered in the pilot program is a casino project developed in the Sunworld Banahill tourist area in Danang City, central Vietnam.

The report said the ministry suggested that the development of these two projects and their addition to the pilot scheme would help revive the country's tourism sector.
